I never meant for things to turn out this way.
Never meant to take away Your birthday.
Just tried to make the little boys and girls glad
Help them to want to be good, not bad.
But turned around, it all seems to be
I get all the attention now, instead of thee

Why people put me in front, I’ll never know
When You’re the one who loves them so.
You gave up Your heavenly throne to come down here
You lived, died, and live again for those You love dear.
Oh, I never meant it to be this way
Never meant to take away Your birthday
Let’s put You back into the Christmas season
Because without You, there’d be no reason.
Why have things gotten so out of hand
When the first Christmas was so simple, easy to understand
We’ve made it complicated, so misunderstood
Maybe people will go back to the beginning, if only they would.
