From the NLR Police Department:

The most popular items taken in burglaries these days are large screen televisions, electronic games and laptop computers. It is very important that you record serial numbers to any item that has one, especially the noted items and any weapons you may have in the house. Doing this will greatly help should the police department come across your stolen item. If an item is taken and we have the serial number, we enter it into the Arkansas Criminal Information Center (ACIC). If the serial number of that stolen item is run through ACIC by a police officer we will know that it is stolen should we come across it. So please take the time to record all items that you possess that have serial numbers. This will be of great benefit to you and the police.

From Bob Major (NLR Chamber of Commerce):

Some Gave All / All Gave Some

The citizens of North Little Rock are building a Veterans Memorial to honor ALL servicemen and women. Special recognition will be given to residents of North Little Rock who have lost their lives in combat by having their names etched in granite on the Memorial. The Memorial, located in the William F. Laman Library Plaza, will recognize all branches of the armed services, MIA and POW’s.

The Chamber of Commerce of North Little Rock is spearheading the community fund raising drive to raise $50,000 to complete the project. Tax deductible donations of any amount may be made to the North Little Rock Veterans Memorial Fund. The committee is asking businesses to consider making a donation to the fund. Also, we are asking your assistance in distributing the information to your employees and placing the forms prominently in your business. The attached donation form may be reproduced. Please e-mail this message to other individuals or groups you know who may be interested in this Memorial project.

All of us have been touched in some way by the men and women of our city who have pledged to protect our freedoms. This is an opportunity for each of us to say “thank you” with a lasting tribute to those who have served.

The target date for completion of the Memorial is Veterans Day, November 11, 2010. If your business/organization/church would like additional information or a presentation along with a scale model of the Memorial, please contact me.

Your help and support of the community-wide campaign is greatly appreciated.

Laman Library now has a page on their website dedicated to the Memorial. They also have a Facebook page to watch the progress: North Little Rock Veterans Memorial.

From Scott Miller (Argenta Neighborhood Boosters):

On Thursday, May 6th the Argenta Neighborhood Boosters will host a
candidate forum for the State House District 39 race and State Senate
District 34 races. This forum is open to the public and you and your
neighborhood residents are all invited. The candidates will make their
opening statements with most of the meeting time dedicated to taking
questions from the audience. This will be the ONLY candidate forum
focused exclusively on these two races.

These districts cover about 1/3 of NLR and parts of Wards 1, 2 & 3
including the following neighborhoods :Scenic Hill, Baring Cross, HOLT,
Mid-Cities, Dark Hollow, Sherman Park, Argenta, East Washington, Dixie,
Rose City, Glenview, Meadowpark, Poe, McAlmont. In past years these
elected representatives have directed thousands of dollars to our City
and organizations like the CDC’s and Boys & Girls Clubs. Since neither
of these races have Republican opposition, the winners of the May 18th
primary will be our elected representatives in the State Legislature.

I have attached a flyer for this forum, which you can send out to your
membership or other interested parties. The forum will be held at the
1st Presbyterian Church on the corner of 4th Street and Maple Street
downtown from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm next Thursday May 6th.

I hope to see you there

Treasurer
Argenta Neighborhood Boosters

NLR citizens be aware of possible census scams. Workers WILL NOT ask for your SSN, money, harass you, or email you.

The NLRPD is advising all citizens to be aware of a possible census scam and to protect their personal information. It is important to remember that there are distinct differences between a real census worker and an identity thief trying to fraudulently obtain your personal information. US Census workers will have identification but sometimes identification cards can be fabricated… So, it is VERY important to remember what Census workers will NOT do.

Census Workers WILL NOT
1. ask for your social security number of ANY type of financial information
2. ask for money or say that you owe money
3. harass or intimidate you
4. contact you by email.

By remembering these simple guidelines the citizens of NLR will be able to protect themselves from anyone looking to target unsuspecting victims.

The North Little Rock Police Department has started using an online service called Nixle to provide public information and alerts about crime and traffic. If you use Twitter or Facebook, this service is somewhat similar to those, except it is designed for cities and agencies to provide information that is applicable to your neighborhood (NLRPD is also on Twitter, follow at @NLRPD). Crime alerts can be issued directly to your email or cell phone. For example, when the Sherwood manhunt moved over into the Lakewood area, an alert was sent out.

I would highly advise registering with the site and signing up for notifications from the NLRPD to your cell phone (look under Settings after you’ve registered).

Paul Myrick, the President of the Amboy Neighborhood Association received the following message from the NLR Police:

We recently made an arrest where over 90 pawn tickets were discovered. This means that people who break into your homes and vehicles are pawning (at least some) of your stolen property. Make sure that you record serial numbers to the property you would like to get back if stolen like: TVs – cameras – DVD players – firearms – game stations – also, take the time to photograph and etch your DL number some place not readily visible. Too many times we take reports where the victims do not have any serial numbers recorded.

Paul then goes on to explain the some of the process that pawn shops go through (he’s worked at one of the pawn shops on Belwood) and gives some vital advice:

THE OWNER HAS TO HAVE THE SERIAL NUMBERS RECORDED SOMEWHERE IN ORDER FOR THIS SYSTEM TO WORK.

Every week there are at least 5 people who either come by or call the shop to ask if we’ve seen this or that lately. I know by the way they ask that they’ve been ripped off and they are trying to find their stuff. I ask the question “did you report it to the police?” and “Did you have the Serial Numbers for the police report,” and 9 times out of 10 they did not. These are the people who will never get their stuff back, and the person who ripped them off will remain free to rip someone else off.

Read the whole thing here.

Take the time to create a home inventory – you will be thankful you did. As Paul says, it can be as simple as a sheet of notebook paper (kept somewhere safe of course – remember that you don’t want to lose it in a fire as this will be very helpful for insurance purposes also).

There are also online services that will keep an inventory for you. I found Know Your Stuff, an online home inventory, and I’m trying it out now.

Anyone have any good advice or experience with home inventories and other ways to protect your items?
